1,002 post-mortem bags arrive for a dignified response in La Guaira

LA GUAIRA, Venezuela — Just over two weeks after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, Fundación Corazones por la Vida received an emergency donation from Americares: 1,002 adult post-mortem bags prepared for use in the disaster response. The shipment answered an urgent but often unseen need — enabling teams to care for the deceased safely, respectfully and with dignity while search, recovery and identification efforts continued.

A national tragedy centered on the coast

The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck on June 24, causing widespread destruction across north-central Venezuela. La Guaira, the coastal state that connects Caracas with the country’s main international airport, was among the hardest-hit areas as buildings collapsed and emergency teams searched unstable structures.

By July 8, authorities had reported 3,811 deaths, 16,740 injuries and nearly 18,000 people without homes. Behind those figures were thousands of families waiting for news, responders working through debris and institutions facing an unprecedented demand for specialized emergency supplies.

An emergency shipment from Americares

Americares donated 1,002 adult post-mortem bags to Fundación Corazones por la Vida. The operation comprised 167 cartons consolidated on five pallets, with the shipment formally documented on July 6 for humanitarian use in Venezuela’s earthquake response.

Post-mortem bags are an essential part of mass-fatality management. They help protect responders, preserve identification processes and ensure that every deceased person is handled with the respect owed to them and their family. Their value is measured not only in logistics, but in the dignity they make possible at the most painful moment of an emergency.

From the airport to the response network

The photographs document the operation from the Americares handoff and nighttime air movement to reception on the ground in La Guaira. Fundación Corazones por la Vida coordinated the transfer of the pallets, ground transportation and the next stage of deployment so the supplies could be positioned where responders needed them.

This last mile required people, vehicles and close communication. Fundación Corazones por la Vida worked alongside Funeraria Vallés, Ángeles de la Autopista and Cascos Azules Venezuela, whose support helped connect the incoming donation with the operational response in the affected area.

Partnership in service of human dignity

Disaster response is often described through rescue missions, field hospitals and food distributions. The solemn work of caring for those who died is less visible, yet it is equally necessary. It protects public health, supports identification and gives families a path toward answers and farewell.

The Americares donation, received by Fundación Corazones por la Vida and supported on the ground by Funeraria Vallés, Ángeles de la Autopista and Cascos Azules Venezuela, showed what coordinated humanitarian action can accomplish. Each organization contributed to a chain of care built around responsibility, respect and service.

A commitment that continues

For Fundación Corazones por la Vida, receiving this first emergency shipment was not the end of the operation. It was part of a broader response that continued through medical outreach, essential supplies, meals, WASH activities and direct support to communities in La Guaira.
